The South Bay palm-weevil front line
South American palm weevil came up through Tijuana, hit San Ysidro first, and has been working its way through National City, Chula Vista, and Imperial Beach Canary Island date palms for years. National City sits at the heart of the worst-affected zone in San Diego County. We treat every palm visit as a crown inspection first and a trim second — by the time fronds are visibly drooping from the street, the tree is usually past saving.
Species we work with
- Canary Island date palm — the species hit hardest by South American palm weevil. Visits start with a crown check, every time.
- Mexican fan palm — tall, fast, and the main fire-fuel concern when the skirt builds up on chain-link rows.
- Edible date palm — annual pod removal and careful skinning.
- Queen palm — heavy seed pods that stain pool decks and patios if not cleared annually.
- King palm — light maintenance, mostly seasonal cleanup.
- Sago palm — technically a cycad but handled the same way: pup removal, dead frond clearing.
What a National City palm visit covers
Crown inspection for weevil, fusarium, and scale on every visit. Frond-skirt removal back to clean trunk on Mexican fans and date palms, seed-pod clearing, trunk skinning where appropriate, and on-site chipping so nothing gets left on the curb. For palms along the Sweetwater channel or near structures we cut to the spec the County Fire Authority actually wants to see — not whatever a generic landscaper thinks "fire safe" looks like.

Property-line rows: coordinate with the neighbor
Most palm rows in the wartime tract grids sit on a shared property line and are technically owned by both sides. Trimming both sides at the same visit is almost always cheaper than two separate jobs — same equipment, same access, one chip haul. We're happy to talk to the neighbor or just quote both sides separately if that's easier for you.
Removals and transplants
Most palms we remove in National City come out for one of two reasons: weevil has taken the crown beyond recovery, or the palm has outgrown the lot — too close to the bungalow, dropping pods into a tight patio, or a row that's gotten taller than the original owner ever wanted. We section them down in tight quarters, grind the stump, and chip every frond. Healthy weevil-free CIDPs and edible date palms can often be transplanted instead — we'll quote both options.
Pest pressure to watch for
South American palm weevil is the dominant concern — National City is at the front line in San Diego County. Fusarium wilt and palm scale are also worth watching. Salt-air doesn't kill palms but accelerates other stress. We check the crown on every palm visit and tell you what we see — early intervention is the difference between a treatment and a removal.

Palm work usually rolls in with other tree pruning and removals on the same visit, so the whole property gets handled at once.
